"The knights of the MCS"

Thomas Banestre (1332 - 1379)

Thomas is a Sir, who then became a Knight of the Garter.

The Banastres arrived with the Norman Conquest of 1066, and have been in the country ever since. Banestre is a corruption of balestier which is a name for a cross-bowman. He received a knighthood in 1360 from Edward III after a campaign in France. Whilst with the Black Prince in 1375 he received the Order of the Garter. His heraldry can be seen to this day in the stalls of St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

He can be recognised by the black cross (cercelee) on a white background. On occasion he will be seen sporting his armour.
